Date: Civilian Conservation Corps was one of the New Deal Programs which took place in March 31, 1933 to 1942.

Purpose: The purpose of CCC was to provide jobs for the people who was unemployed, single, young men during or after the Great Depression, to help end unemployment.

Achievements:

- The CCC employed about three million men from the time was enacted until it ended in 1942. It did so by creating camps in national parks and forests as well as other wilderness or rural places. It was a semi military environment where young men planted trees, built reservoirs, developed parks and improved agricultural irrigation.

- 250,000 men had jobs within 3 months of the March 1933 start date of the CCC.

- Development of nationwide state parks program due to the work of the young men employed through the CCC.

- Park development and planning began and eventually wading pools, stocked fishing streams and artificial lakes were created. One park, which was specifically significant to our area was the Shenandoah National Park. In 1936, Roosevelt dedicated the park and acknowledge the CCC in its establishment and development.

- Park conservation at a fair cost to tax payers.

- In all three million acres for park use and 854 state parks were developed as well as 62 recreational projects completed resulting in a huge increase in park visitation.

Whom did this program most help?

- Young single men who received education, training and a small pay check as well as a feeling of dignity and honor from working.

- US citizens were 17-23.5 years of age also the projects the men completely helped the public.

Whom did it have the least positive impact? What were the criticisms of the program?

- African Americans "too popular criticism". African Americans were also employed by the CCC but were paidless.

- Did not adequately address the relief needs of African Americans. They also provided a hospitable environment for blacks.

- Tugwell states that the CCC "quickly became too popular for criticism" and The Literary Digest said that, "attacks on the New Deal, no matter how sweeping, rarely, or never extend to the CCC" (The popular CCC).

How successful?

- Third greatest achievement of the NEW DEAL and viewed as highly successful because it provided jobs, and stablished national state panls.

Immediate relief? Long-term recovery? or Reform?

- I would say immediate relief. Because within 3 months 250,000 men had jobs.

Liberal or conservative?

- Liberal. How ever it was supported by both Democrats and Republicans for various reasons. Economic stimulant for local business.
